Corona cruise

A friend sent me a YouTube video that the virus epidemic is spreading. I didn't watch it. At occasional meetings, some members said they would have to cancel their cruise reservations. Viruses are viruses, but because they are feel bad what If people avoid them because they are Asian who are carrying a virus.

The cruise travel I booked last year is coming soon. My husband often watches YouTube and tells me the situation. "If you don't want to get on the ship because of the virus, I can go alone, so stay home." I can use a cramped cruise room alone. I can hang around my own way without his nagging. Because I want to avoid the summer when it is crowded with tourists, and to go to warm places in the cold and eerie season.

If people avoid me because I'm Asian and I'm carrying a virus, I'm more comfortable with the wider space around me. I don't care because it's their problem that others keep away from me. To be honest, I want to enjoy a variety of food prepared by others on the cruise. I don't want to speak English when I eat. If someone is good to me, I should pretend to be good too. I understand the feelings of the elderly, who usually don't have chance to open their mouths, but if I give them a little chance, they talk.

What I've heard from my father since I was a child, "If a person goes to the right, you go to the left. Find and do what others don't do. If you go to a place where others are flocking, it's too late to get something. It's not a very relevant advice for this virus, but I didn't want to miss the chance because I thought the ship would be empty if people cancelled their reservations. Unless the cruise company cancelled, I decided to ride and packed my bags.

A few days before leaving for the cruise, the cruise company sent me a email. 'We monitored the COVID-19 situation closely including the travel advisories issued by the U.S. State Department and information updates issued by the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. and the World Health Organization in Switzerland. You can cancel without incurring any cancellation fees. You will be issued a voucher for future travel valid for 24 months.'

Maybe I was crazy to become a water ghost or to die of a virus. People often die from what they do with passion. If I like it, I often do it, and if I do it often, I will die from it. Those who earn profits from people's eerie reactions by teasing the crocodile lose their lives at a mouthful of the crocodiles. People who like the sea are more likely to drown in the sea.

I'm going to stuck at home for a while. As if the submarine is curious about outside of the water and looks out with periscope, I should come out when the virus subsides while observing it. But since the stock is falling and the economy isn't spinning properly, after the virus, do I have to suffer from living difficulties? I'll get the virus before I suffer from living difficulties?

A Bird Inside My Chest

I raise a bird inside my chest. I don’t know its size, color, or shape.
Some days, the bird flaps wildly, trying to escape. Other days, it stays quiet, as if asleep. When the bird flutters its wings, I lose control. I feel anxious and distressed. Sometimes it lasts for hours, sometimes for days. If it goes on too long, I lose my appetite and lie down in bed.
But when the bird suddenly becomes calm, as if it found a safe nest, I slowly get up and try to regain my strength.

Sometimes I calm the bird myself. Sometimes it quiets down on its own. But maybe… it's time to let it go. I want the bird to fly free, and I want to stop being shaken by it. I want peace. I wish I could pull it out and throw it away. But it’s not that easy to let go. Do I have to die to be free from this bird? Is that the only way for both of us to go our separate ways?

If death is the only answer, then I must accept this bird as part of me.
I should keep living, no matter how much noise it makes. Maybe the bird will get bored of me and fly away on its own if I stop reacting.
This is my challenge.

I had high eye pressure and often visited the eye clinic. After the exam, they told me to wait until my pressure went down. One day, the doctor said I needed surgery before glaucoma developed. So I had the surgery quickly. My father often had his eye pressure checked. My aunt started going blind when she was young. So I didn’t hesitate. She tried to get treatment in Germany with her daughter’s help,
but she still lost her vision in the end.

I asked the doctor,
"Did my eyes get worse from working, writing, or using the computer all the time?" He said it had nothing to do with those things — it’s just family history and the laser surgery was simple and the result looked good. But now, there’s a gray spot in my left eye that moves every time I move my eyes. It makes me dizzy and tense. I’m afraid to open my eyes.
“How can I live like this, if it never goes away?”
The bird in my chest flaps wildly again, driving me crazy. If I wear sunglasses and keep the room dark, it feels a little better. The doctor only says,
“It’ll get better over time.”
But it’s already been more than two months.

Fine. Let the bird flap its wings.
At least I’m not blind like my aunt.
If I can’t send you away, then I’ll have to live with you. I whispered this to myself and tried to accept the bird as part of me.
Then, the gray spot started to fade and became less visible.
Was it because time really healed it, as the doctor said?
Or… was it because I finally accepted it as part of my body?

Heavy rain, wind, and heat

I woke up on the cars horn. It used to be annoying me, but why do I feel so friendly? I am relaxed by the freedom that I am back in the middle of the city where I can walk around briskly on my feet.

On the way to the Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica, I looked at the fields spread out below the hill. The wind was so nice. How many times have I encountered such a good wind in my life? Everything I see was green. The deep primary colors of wild flowers that bloom in the green leaves are dazzling. It was also fascinating to see birds wagging their pink tails between dark black feathers' gaps.

Arrived at the volcano hot spring resort. I couldn't sleep all night in the pouring rain. It rained continuously the next day. As I was soaking in the hot spring in the rain, I felt unhappy because I doubted whether it was hot spring water or rainwater.

Moved to Monteverde Cloud Forest. The wind was blowing hard. My small body shook so I couldn't walk properly. The wind blew all night. I thought the wind would stop the next day, but it still blew.  Perhaps that's why the streets were neat. Once I went to a emergency because a tiny stone got into my eye. I remembered that I had waited in pain without getting treatment quickly. My husband says the reason is I have a low nose. I was afraid to go out.

Moved to Guanacaste Beach. It is a resort hotel right in front of the beach. There is no humidity, but the sun was a burning and heat flower appeared on my body and itchy. The sand is dark. It's because of volcanic sand. The resort didn't fit me who only tanned without enjoying golf or head-to-water play. Without the car, had to be trapped inside the resort. I couldn't even look around the neighborhood or ate the mainland food. I was with most Americans every day. In short, it was like a luxurious prison.

I heard retired Americans are living on the beach, so I wanted to go to see. I made a reservation with a good a review travel agency. However, it was not easy to control my mind because prices were similar to New York and the climate was so rainy, windy and hot that it was not easy to live. The travel agency received guests like me and handed over the hotel to Expedia and the transfer handed over to a local travel agency. The tourism industry is good. The sight of a pickup van that shows up on time was worth clapping hands. However, the upgraded hotel was in a place where local residents could not reach it. I didn't have anything to say about my son who said, had booked there because it seemed to be comfortable for mom and dad to be in a safe place.

When I came home from being locked up in a resort, I was happy as if I were out of a cage. The street noise was also pleasing to me. I am definitely not a resort constitution. It is a constitution that has to go around the bustling city on my feet. If I close the apartment door, I can stay in a quiet space. Isn't it a resort in a big city?  When I open the door and go out, the city that can walk lively with both feet makes me comfortable. The more I travel, the more I love New York City.
