Parasite-like

Even when I’m living lazily, I quickly switch into battle mode when something goes wrong.

At the end of November last year, I renewed my Obamacare and waited. But even by the end of December, I hadn’t received a bill. When I called the insurance company, they said it was a problem with New York State. When I called New York State, they said it was the insurance company’s billing system.

No matter how much I tried, it wasn’t easy to fix. I wondered if a Korean agency might help, so I visited one. They said if I paid the bill first, they would take care of everything. I trusted them—and paid. But the insurance still didn’t work.  I called the woman who said she would help. “Sis, I have a customer right now. I’ll call you in 10 minutes,” she said in a sweet voice and hung up. She never called back. I called again. “Sis, I promise I’ll call you.” She said that three or four times. But not once did she actually call me.

I should have noticed when she kept calling me “sister” like we were close.
I forgot what my father always warned me: “Be careful when someone you barely know calls you ‘sister’ or ‘brother’.”
I also made the mistake of thinking, “We’re both Korean, surely she’ll help me.”
If only I hadn’t met her…This experience made me feel deeply disappointed in people I never expected.

I ran around, made calls, and fixed the problem myself. But in early February, I received a bill with the wrong amount. Honestly, I wanted to give up on Obamacare. But without insurance, I’d have to pay a penalty. And what if something happened while I was uninsured? I can’t live with that kind of worry.

America’s health insurance system is exhausting. The government ties us down with penalties, while insurance companies raise prices every year. The agencies you’re supposed to trust are often unreliable. All of it left me feeling drained and disappointed.

Once, I was tricked by a lawyer who targeted older Asians with poor English. But after years of immigrant life, I’d been through many battles—on land, sea, and air, as they say. My husband and I fought back with everything we had. For three months, we pushed and pulled, attacked and retreated. In the end, that lawyer, who had underestimated powerless Asians, fell into his own trap.

Compared to that fight with the lawyer, this current situation is nothing. It’s just that the frustration and disappointment from dealing with people is what really wears me down and gives me a headache.

The happiest news I heard this year was that Amazon, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, and JP Morgan Chase are starting a new company to provide affordable health insurance. Warren Buffett said, “Soaring healthcare costs are like a hungry parasite feeding on the American economy.”

I’m counting the days until we no longer have to deal with these parasites.

Red pepper and herbal tea

Soon after I got up and started work, outside the window, it quickly gets dark. My eyes are dim and I let go of my brush. In the short, cold, wintery days, there is no taste of life.

Go to kitchen. Boil anchovies, kelp, onions, and red pepper in large pot.
Keep the soup in a bottle and keep it in a refrigerator. The broth makes miso soup, seaweed soup, dumpling soup and noodle soup.

Red pepper makes the soup spicy and the taste of soup survives. A my stories reader who lives in a dense forest New Jersey, saying she had farming herself last autumn, gave it. Cut them into small pieces and put them in food, they look like red flowers bloom. I am sorry I did not give back to the reader who brought it from afar. And always thank her.

The owner of a neighboring vegetable store does not eat his own vegetable from store. She directly nourishes it in the backyard. I want to farm after hearing the word. But what I can do without land. If someone gives me something that they raise themself, I do not waste any leaves.

I go to the bathroom with herbal tea and a book. It is good to read books while soaking my feet in the hot water. I got herb from a friend who farms herb at harvest time last autumn. According to her husband, "Herb is a panacea," and it gives me energy.

I hear the sound of opening the door and calling it 'wife'. My husband takes off his shoes and looking forward to what will come out for dinner with his nose flapping. Sitting on a table with a cheap wine, we hope that spring comes soon after spending a long winter night.

Early this year, when it was unusually cold, the muddy ice sheet that was running down the Hudson River does not melt. Meeting once a month with friends who are busy chatting drive away the dark, boring winter, and then warm spring will come a closer. Let's wait a little more.

A useless thought

To dissect, the frog, pinned by four legs. The frog struggled with its bare stomach. I was thrown out into the hall in response to the biology teacher's criticism of my restless self. I was anxious about snooping in the classroom and I lost interest in the biology class.

I do not know the world I'm stepping on, how can I know the faraway universe? I was reluctant to study physics too because it was not sure as if it was wandering through a fog.

The history of the fighting, which is a series of factional fights that all sorts of opposition slaughter every time the wave is changed, was sad. Nowadays, there is no interest in the politics. I was far away from the Bible class, which began withHuman beings were born sinners."

Mathematics was the subject I hated the most. I couldn’t solve my math problems even in my dreams. I couldn't have liked a foreign language class because I did not have the ability to memorize, However, I always looked forward to Korean language class, which I used to enjoy reading books.

I also liked music class. Unfortunately, I got piano lessons for over a year on behalf of my poor voice, but I could not read music note properly. The music teacher, who was tapping the back of my hand to relax my fingers, said I should give up.

My father went to see an art teacher. I started the lesson at the teacher who said, 'I could feel something in your daughter’s paintings rather than being so talented.' The teacher pointed to the old palace bathroom to me as I sat down to paint Kyungbok Palace with my friends. And he said “Try to put a dim, damp atmosphere on the screen instead of insisting on a bright and cheerful space” in outdoor class.

I went to school hard because I liked to hang out with my friends. During the chapel time, I was scolded for lying in the shade of a tree on the backside of the school. After class, I enjoyed playing the cross until it is dim in the playground with my friends. The one arm of the school uniform fell out against the friend who pulled me out in the cross. And then I used to run to the snack stand with my broken school uniform arms swinging.

Especially during a class when my biology teacher was explaining sperm and egg, my partner suddenly asked, "Teacher, where can I buy sperm and egg? "You can buy it in the market." In my strange answer, everyone was rolling their feet and laughing. I can't forget as easily as the class.
