Say a word

The two young ladies, who seemed to be fresh from Seoul Korea with luxury goods and white face, looked at us as if they were going to shout a word to end us. I ignored them and kept on talking. My ears are itches. I guess they’re talking about me now.

My talking, which made them blink with disgust eyes, was excited comparing the way two dog owners breed dogs. So I couldn’t stop it.

The lovely dogs of two acquaintances I have watched since they adopted have both passed away in recent months.

A friend who keeps her dog calmly with an attitude of ‘dog is a dog.’ died last month to raise it with love even though she scolded it. The dog coughed heavily in the morning and not getting out of bed, so she looked at her and died. She was lucky to have died without being sick. My friend buried her under the backyard berry tree in the tears of her two daughters who were together in their childhood.

There is an acquaintance that raised a puppy by calling it a daughter. Her daughter, who grew up more than her pampered, died of cancer. I heard that she was crying with a box of bones. The grief would be great because the presence of a puppy in her eye was more than the existence of her husband and child.

When the puppy is alive, if we happen to meet in the park and turn around to break up, she used to tell me to give her puppy a good bye, if you do not, my puppy mourns. Even when she came to my house did not leave her dog in the backyard. Let her dog inside and if the dog put his feet on the table, I could not tell the dog to get off the foot because she hated people’s scolding her dog.

If people around her do not follow her own way like puppy, she would be angry.
Her dog may welcome her and follow her, but why should I wave to her and obey her? She has gradually moved away from my view.

My husband brother bought a puppy for my mother-in-law, who is suffering from depression due to aging and she was as quiet as before. Is it true that dogs are effective in treating depression?

An excuse for a miser immigrant

'Why are you so cheap?'

Whenever I went to Seoul Korea, I heard from it my father. When I was under my parents, I could have what I wanted by twisting my body in the middle of Myeong-dong. But hard marriage and immigration made me a cheapskate.

In the early days of marriage, whenever I was tired, I went to my parents' house and ate some delicious food and relaxed. But as time went by, I was shivering with a few bucks, but they were wasting a lot of money. Life was in contrast to me. I was no longer the place to visit.

After my mother's death, a new family member, sister-in-law, and my father's girlfriend, who pretended to be the owner and congratulated each other's mother's wealth and treated me as a stranger. My parent home turned into the stage of others who could not intervene any more, and they turned away to bitter memories.

The idea that I should live well has made me more cheapskates.

Whenever I hear acquaintance that says, “Untie some money. You have to spend money and contribute to economic development." I don’t hesitate to say, “There is nothing I want to buy. I am going to take it when I die." But in fact, whenever I buy something, I think that the first thing that comes up in my head is to buy something rubbish.  And then I put it down.

I often hear "Is not it inconvenient to live without furniture in the house?" Rather than filling up with heavy objects, I enjoy a quick peek at a bank account where I can always buy things anytime I want. But when I die, who will take the money what I leave? My daughter-in-law or who? Make me rush off to travel to spend money.

Why are my acquaintances so interested in my money? What makes it easy to borrow from people around and parent after losing jobs finally end up being homeless overnight in immigrant life?

A long time ago, an old monk was washing his face in the water of the Taedong River in Korea while accompanied by a young monk. Old monk said “You bastard. Save water.” "Is this a lot of water? Young monk said and old monk replied. “I mean to be careful when you have it, you're sparing it.” It's a piece of the old story that my husband often admires.

His pocket is my pocket

Unlike my husband who always wants to buy flowers, I buy flowers when I become sentimental.

The light green flowers looked like a leaves and a flowers seemed to be strange that I picked. Petals are also tightly packed, but if I put them in a vase, they will last long.

When I gave birth to a big child, my husband took a large flowerpot, entered the hospital bedroom, and stared at me with a big face covered in a flowerpot. Why was it plant, not flower?

One year on Christmas Day, my husband smiled and threw me a gold bracelet, saying, “I hung around in front of a window of a local jewelry shop's for several days to find a sophisticated design. It seems to have paid quite a lot of money, but the more I look at it, the more I emotional it is.

He went to exhibit in Mexico and bought a silver brooch in the shape of a coin. He borrowed money from a friend for lack of money. I had always carried it with me but I was robbed on a trip to Turkey.

The silver mirror that he bought from Insadong in Seoul Korea, I looked at it every day but the unfortunately handle was broken. Silver earrings and Indian necklaces that fit well with black turtleneck sweaters are quite neatly designed. Even after many years, design and craftsmanship are wonderful.

That is all the gifts I have ever received from my husband since I likes silver more than gold. Since then, I have not get any more because I though my husband pocket is mine. Of course, I prepared two gold wedding rings, no wedding anniversary or birthday present, but I am not at all bothered. When I think of my husband who would have though much time and effort to save funds and buy my gifts, I feel warm.

I was ready to prepare for dinner more promptly than usual. I chopped green onions, garlics and almond to mixed with anchovy. While boiling cod soup, put red pepper and green onion. And I set the table with a kale miso soup, and a water kimchi. I lit a candle and prepared the wine.
