Five women in twilight

The rain was on the trail all night and stopped at dawn. Last year, as it is now, in the late autumn of rainy, four friends gathered at a friend's house. This time there are five. Three friends who did not come last year joined, and the two friends who were with us last year fell out.

The generous dinner table prepared by an invited friend lost the warmth of waiting for us for a long time. I drank alcohol while looking down at the river in the red glow. I was soaked with relaxation. The next morning, I drank coffee while I watched the glittering white sailboat, which was exposed through the water fog. I wanted to stop the time and go back to my romantic college days.

The hills that show off the brilliant colors looking down from the apple fields on the above hill have glowed a more aggressive light. It seemed to resemble us in the twilight, as it radiates the last before falling leaves, I lost a word to say.

Pick up the apples that fell under the apple tree and rub it in clothes to take a bite. Sweet water wets the mouth. The excitement of spending a few days at a friend's house was enough to wash away the fatigue.

Just as the colors of the earth are different, five of our friends who walk through apple fields are different from each other. The personality, how to live, and the values to pursue are different, but they acknowledge each other's differences and do well together.

If fall foliage is only one color, can we really feel atmosphere of autumn with its dry taste? As the mountains are lit up with the fall foliage color are different just our friends are also different, so our twilight is more colorful.

The fall foliage may look different from close up, but if you look down from space, don’t you think they are subtle monochrome?

Change woman's mind is not guilty

I was born in Seoul, Korea but I’ve lived longer in New York.

I came to New York for graduate school and got married. I’ve been trying to be an artist ever since I landed at JFK for the first time.

As an immigrant, creating a new life in a new country is difficult. As an immigrant artist, is it very difficult. As an immigrant artist married to another immigrant artist, it is near-impossible. However, I have memories of my homeland to help express myself through my art.

I remember I’m wearing fresh clothes dried after being washed on the rocks in a small brook near my house. I’m lying on a straw mat at sunset, having a conversation with friends and listening to the crying cicadas. I’m warm and safe and the day never ends.

I remember Mom is in our Buddhist temple and I play with the other children in the courtyard. I guard her favorite white rubber shoes with the thin soles as she prayed and prayed for something I never could know.

After getting married, my husband and I had no money and no place to live together. I drew on our kitchen table with materials my husband left over after while he slept. We didn’t have much back then but I was just happy to live in New York and continue making my art.

More than thirty years have passed since I first landed at JFK. Now I can finally afford a studio with time to spare. In my paintings you can find the woman alone, the woman in thought, the woman worn out, and the woman enjoying the moment. Sometimes I feel they all say the same thing: Do Not Disturb. If they have a husband and he disturbs them, she will file for divorce.

The Buddha taught his students two kinds of human pains. You want what you cannot have and even if you do get it, it’s never what you expected it to be. I am working on my art to the best of my ability. I wish one day there is a mature, sophisticated woman in my paintings. But maybe, in the end, all I will find is an angry woman disappointed with how her life turned out.

I am sorry. Let’s broke up.

The day I expected finally came.

"Mom, I broke up." "Is she crying? "Yes," the moment I lost my words, I rushed into the bathroom and I cried. It was my older son’s girl friend I liked very much.

"Did you brake up because you got a new girl?" "No. I felt like I was choking. She wants to get married and lives in Long Island. I do not want to get married and I do not want to live in the suburbs. Mom, are you okay?" "What shall I do? You cannot breathe. I hope she can quickly forget the playboy like you and meet Jewish doctor who works in the same hospital."

Unlike my older son, the young son dates the girl as if he is waiting for a break. When his first girlfriend dumped him, he seemed calm, as if he had to wait.

My younger son told me, that "Mom, she asked me to break up and I said okay. After a while she called me and said that she wanted to come back to me. She broke up repeatedly and told me to meet again several times.”

"Mom I broke up. This time I told her I wanted to break up." "Why?" "I feel heavy. She is much older than I am. "Is she crying?" "Yes." Unlike a big boy, it is a sad voice.

"That’s life. Meet and brake up. Then there is a time when you feel like you should marry this person. Like looking for the house, when I see a house I love, I run for it like crazy.”

You guys said, you could make up for each other’s difference and associate well when you met girls for the first time. Now you guys were tired of the girls, so decided to break up because of choking and heavy felling. What a bunch of bastards!

Aren’t the girls crying now as I used to sit in a dark room after men dumped me? Every time I think of the girls that my sons abandoned as if I have sinned, I feel a sharp pain in my heart and sigh deeply.
