I am sorry. Let’s broke up.

The day I expected finally came.

"Mom, I broke up." "Is she crying? "Yes," the moment I lost my words, I rushed into the bathroom and I cried. It was my older son’s girl friend I liked very much.

"Did you brake up because you got a new girl?" "No. I felt like I was choking. She wants to get married and lives in Long Island. I do not want to get married and I do not want to live in the suburbs. Mom, are you okay?" "What shall I do? You cannot breathe. I hope she can quickly forget the playboy like you and meet Jewish doctor who works in the same hospital."

Unlike my older son, the young son dates the girl as if he is waiting for a break. When his first girlfriend dumped him, he seemed calm, as if he had to wait.

My younger son told me, that "Mom, she asked me to break up and I said okay. After a while she called me and said that she wanted to come back to me. She broke up repeatedly and told me to meet again several times.”

"Mom I broke up. This time I told her I wanted to break up." "Why?" "I feel heavy. She is much older than I am. "Is she crying?" "Yes." Unlike a big boy, it is a sad voice.

"That’s life. Meet and brake up. Then there is a time when you feel like you should marry this person. Like looking for the house, when I see a house I love, I run for it like crazy.”

You guys said, you could make up for each other’s difference and associate well when you met girls for the first time. Now you guys were tired of the girls, so decided to break up because of choking and heavy felling. What a bunch of bastards!

Aren’t the girls crying now as I used to sit in a dark room after men dumped me? Every time I think of the girls that my sons abandoned as if I have sinned, I feel a sharp pain in my heart and sigh deeply.

A sunflower husband

'718-349-6510' was our home phone number for 30 years.

"Where is the someone with the house phone these days? I can buy a suit every month for that money. Not knowing what is going on in the world. Don’t just stick to the old thing."

Do you quietly enjoy the sounds of acquaintances from Seoul saying such as, ‘do you still have this phone number?’ I do not know why he refused to get rid of it.

My husband wanted to keep this old phone number very much, as if he was waiting for his ex-girlfriend’s phone call, for fear of losing his connection in Seoul. However I get rid of it and gave him a cellular phone. He is not satisfied with the things created by modern civilization’s products, often misses the old home phone because he forgot where he left the cell phone and he is confused about using it.

Our home phone is gone and we cannot get phone calls from visitors from Seoul Korea who know the old number. Life has become quiet.

My husband, who doesn’t know how to use the Internet, e-mail and he does not meet people, has become more and more alone. If he is bored to make art works, it is best to repair the house. Other than him, I occasionally meet friends, and chat with them for doing mouth exercises. But the only person who opens his mouth is the wife who’s accompanied at the dinner.

With compassion on him I prepare the drinking table and say, “are you sure to live without saying so? What a pity!” “It’s okay. Life in lonely anyway." he said.

Contemporary civilization has contributed to making my husband more solitary like sunflowers that only look at me. Also made our relationship much better.

Night guest

I heard the faint sound of bells in the distance. The sound was getting louder and was awaking me up slowly from unconsciousness. It was 1:00 am in the morning.

My husband is screaming that our younger son who is supposed to be in Japan is here without any prior notice. I break into tears as soon as I see his skinny self step into the apartment. “What brings you home?” “I just want to come home to see you.”

How could he take after me? When I was studying overseas long time ago, I looked out the window and suddenly I missed my mother. I went to Korea without any notice. I pushed the door that my father unlocks every morning when he goes to jogging and I crept into the house. My mom glanced at me slyly and continues to work on what she has been doing. Suddenly she realized who it was and dropped the dish that she was holding and started crying ‘oh my little lovely baby!’ same as how I am doing right now.

I was so happy to talk with mom lying on her bed. My son did same thing that I did. He rested on my bed and I tried not to disturb him and began preparing his favorite foods. How hard it is to make a living abroad! Even though he keeps saying he likes his job.

Since his youth, He has loved reading Haruki Murakami’s books. Therefore he went to Japan to get a job two and a half years ago. Actually Haruki fells in love with western culture. I read his books and listened to his favorite music to understand my son.

“Why don’t you come back and get a job in New York?” “Mom, I want to be a comedian.” “Whatever you want to do, you can do it.” “It is hard to survive being a comedian.” “I can support you. You have a lot of talent. If you work hard you can make it. Let me hear your comedy.

He makes me laugh and keeps me happy. But I feel sad because I remember what my mother said, “Please notify me before you come visit me next time. Don’t surprise me again.

I wish I could have surprised her again but the next time when I visited my hometown my mother was no longer there. She already died.
