After April

Who called April a cruel month! In the chaos, people wander. But shouldn’t find pleasure in my own way? Taking a walk these days is the greatest happiness in my daily life. Go to bed earlier than usual and get up faster to walk quietly along the Hudson River.

The woman next door whom I met in the hallway told me to take the elevator down alone first. Thank you for her consideration. Eventually, she left for the Vermont cottage. Inside the condo, there is sign that many people have left. The elevator became my own. I just feel guarding the empty building with doorman.

Wearing sunglasses and gloves, a hat and a mask, I go out for a walk. I myself am appalled by my appearance in the mirror. I really appreciate the people who avoid me during the walk. It is not easy to walk away from people. Like dogs, I wander the path that is not even a path. Puppies walk to look to mingle with the same group, but I walk to avoid people.

I climb up a rock that is under a woodpecker-wailing tree. I stare across the river for a while at New Jersey, hoping my friends in New Jersey will bear the Coronavirus crisis well. If nature is the same as it used to be, we will meet again without any problems.

The pink magnolia blooms in disarray and seems to hold me and complain. Daffodils bow with their heads down as if to console me. The forsythia occasionally hides its bright yellow color as if people were cowering. Falling into a calm ecstasy under the widespread cherry blossoms, I forgets for a moment about the coronavirus. Suddenly a big man ran to the side. I was surprised as if the virus had stuck to me.

After a walk, I look out the window with a cup of coffee. There's no one. I look around for a long time. An older man than me passes without a mask. “You are brave!” Mumbling, shall I go shopping? I was going to be brave enough to leave, but I sit down again.

At 7 p.m., people open windows for a few minutes, scream and tap the tableware. A veranda roar that began in Italy spread to New York like a virus. People scream as if they have achieved prior communication. For the first time since I moved in, I waved to the people of my apartment across the street.

I also tap the big gong that was my father's favorite item. Jing Jing, Jing Jing. In those old days, it is as if the shaman who dressed colorful, primary-colored beat up brass gong to defeat evil. What if it's just like this situation, why don't we bring the shamans from our motherland and have a shamanic exorcism in the middle of Times Square with the feeling of beating the Coronavirus with the "energy" of thousands of years in the Far East?

A debtor's confession

I am alone as if I were trapped on an island. I hear a siren, and when the siren suddenly stops near my apartment, I feel the ominous feeling that something is near. I hear only the clock sound. The day is long and slow. I am obsessed with all sorts of thoughts and goes back and forth from the present to the past. This is because I am stuck at home with coronavirus all day long.

Suddenly, I wondered if there is anybody who didn't get the money I lent to. Of course not. I wondered if there is someone else's money that I didn't pay back. There is. Why did I forget to pay back? I hate people who borrow and don't pay back even if small or big. How could I not pay back?

More than 35 years ago, I borrowed a substantial amount of money from someone. "How can you lend me a large sum of money without collateral?" asked to the lender. "You're so picky, I trust that you won't be able to live on your life without paying back your debts."  I paid her two percent interest every month until I paid off. It was very important and precious seed money.

The friend I borrowed the money is my best friend in high school. She came to America a year earlier than me and settled down. I felt like hell got married to a hopeless artist and living every day. One day, she asked me to come to a high school reunion. so I just took the pay price of meal. However, I was perplexed by the fact that I had to pay for the alumni fee. I borrowed it from her and haven't paid it back so far. Of course, I didn't go to the reunion anymore. I had the opportunity to pay back to her for a few more times since, but I couldn't pay it back because I didn't have enough money in my hands each time. Then I forgot it in my memory. No, I think I've determined to completely forget it.

I have to pay it off right away. I dialed her phone number that is on my old notebook. It was a disconnected number. I found her name and address on Google and called, but it is the same. It was all disconnected phone numbers, looking for and calling again. I contacted the reunion, but I couldn't find it. I also contacted her old job, which I heard through another classmate, but there's no one like her.

Maybe my friend decided not to see me at all because she couldn't ask me to pay back? “In the meantime, I didn't pay back your money because I had for living well, and I didn't contact you. Can you contact me. When the coronavirus is over, I'll pay back your money and I will treat you meals. Do you know I'm writing in the newspaper? You can find out by contacting The Korea Daily. Be sure to contact me. Sorry. Thanks"

Though she is now dead, a word stuck in my ear during I conversation with my grandmother-in-law from Hamkyong Province is still vivid. “Don’t be with a friend who doesn’t pay back the money in time

Corona cruise

A friend sent me a YouTube video that the virus epidemic is spreading. I didn't watch it. At occasional meetings, some members said they would have to cancel their cruise reservations. Viruses are viruses, but because they are feel bad what If people avoid them because they are Asian who are carrying a virus.

The cruise travel I booked last year is coming soon. My husband often watches YouTube and tells me the situation. "If you don't want to get on the ship because of the virus, I can go alone, so stay home." I can use a cramped cruise room alone. I can hang around my own way without his nagging. Because I want to avoid the summer when it is crowded with tourists, and to go to warm places in the cold and eerie season.

If people avoid me because I'm Asian and I'm carrying a virus, I'm more comfortable with the wider space around me. I don't care because it's their problem that others keep away from me. To be honest, I want to enjoy a variety of food prepared by others on the cruise. I don't want to speak English when I eat. If someone is good to me, I should pretend to be good too. I understand the feelings of the elderly, who usually don't have chance to open their mouths, but if I give them a little chance, they talk.

What I've heard from my father since I was a child, "If a person goes to the right, you go to the left. Find and do what others don't do. If you go to a place where others are flocking, it's too late to get something. It's not a very relevant advice for this virus, but I didn't want to miss the chance because I thought the ship would be empty if people cancelled their reservations. Unless the cruise company cancelled, I decided to ride and packed my bags.

A few days before leaving for the cruise, the cruise company sent me a email. 'We monitored the COVID-19 situation closely including the travel advisories issued by the U.S. State Department and information updates issued by the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. and the World Health Organization in Switzerland. You can cancel without incurring any cancellation fees. You will be issued a voucher for future travel valid for 24 months.'

Maybe I was crazy to become a water ghost or to die of a virus. People often die from what they do with passion. If I like it, I often do it, and if I do it often, I will die from it. Those who earn profits from people's eerie reactions by teasing the crocodile lose their lives at a mouthful of the crocodiles. People who like the sea are more likely to drown in the sea.

I'm going to stuck at home for a while. As if the submarine is curious about outside of the water and looks out with periscope, I should come out when the virus subsides while observing it. But since the stock is falling and the economy isn't spinning properly, after the virus, do I have to suffer from living difficulties? I'll get the virus before I suffer from living difficulties?

A Bird Inside My Chest

I raise a bird inside my chest. I don’t know its size, color, or shape.
Some days, the bird flaps wildly, trying to escape. Other days, it stays quiet, as if asleep. When the bird flutters its wings, I lose control. I feel anxious and distressed. Sometimes it lasts for hours, sometimes for days. If it goes on too long, I lose my appetite and lie down in bed.
But when the bird suddenly becomes calm, as if it found a safe nest, I slowly get up and try to regain my strength.

Sometimes I calm the bird myself. Sometimes it quiets down on its own. But maybe… it's time to let it go. I want the bird to fly free, and I want to stop being shaken by it. I want peace. I wish I could pull it out and throw it away. But it’s not that easy to let go. Do I have to die to be free from this bird? Is that the only way for both of us to go our separate ways?

If death is the only answer, then I must accept this bird as part of me.
I should keep living, no matter how much noise it makes. Maybe the bird will get bored of me and fly away on its own if I stop reacting.
This is my challenge.

I had high eye pressure and often visited the eye clinic. After the exam, they told me to wait until my pressure went down. One day, the doctor said I needed surgery before glaucoma developed. So I had the surgery quickly. My father often had his eye pressure checked. My aunt started going blind when she was young. So I didn’t hesitate. She tried to get treatment in Germany with her daughter’s help,
but she still lost her vision in the end.

I asked the doctor,
"Did my eyes get worse from working, writing, or using the computer all the time?" He said it had nothing to do with those things — it’s just family history and the laser surgery was simple and the result looked good. But now, there’s a gray spot in my left eye that moves every time I move my eyes. It makes me dizzy and tense. I’m afraid to open my eyes.
“How can I live like this, if it never goes away?”
The bird in my chest flaps wildly again, driving me crazy. If I wear sunglasses and keep the room dark, it feels a little better. The doctor only says,
“It’ll get better over time.”
But it’s already been more than two months.

Fine. Let the bird flap its wings.
At least I’m not blind like my aunt.
If I can’t send you away, then I’ll have to live with you. I whispered this to myself and tried to accept the bird as part of me.
Then, the gray spot started to fade and became less visible.
Was it because time really healed it, as the doctor said?
Or… was it because I finally accepted it as part of my body?
