After parting

My feet are heavy. I feel empty. I walk slowly through an empty park without looking around, because a friend who walked with me just moved away recently. I thought we walked and get older together, but she left all of a sudden. I can't believe it's this empty.

She must be busy unpacking and adapting to the new neighborhood by now. As if she was coming up to me who walking around alone, and became friends, she is already meeting up to someone and walking together the Washington Square with that refreshing touch of hers, isn't she? She did not go far, just moved near NYU. She strolls in the vibrant park where are many young people and I hang around in a promenade with many old people.

The Riverside Park I walk on is a simple park that is boring and long along the Hudson River like the foot of Mt. Jiri in Korea. I sometimes sit looking at the river as if I were waiting for someone while I enjoy walking by the boring charm of this park. A meeting with her, who suddenly appeared in front of me one day, was precious as if she had been given an unexpected gift. Even on days when we had no plans to meet, I used to walk around in small anticipation that we might bump into each other by accident. But now it's no use looking around makes me feel even lonelier.

During my school days, I am reminded of a middle-aged man, who was guiding Mt Jiri. He guided us through the mountain, starting at Namwon, Jeolla-do and ending at Guri. In the evening, we would gather around the campfire and made a noise. He looked at us silently. When it was time to go to sleep, he was dragging a huge stone that had been heated in the fire into an old military tent. His rear view of dragging the stone seemed very lonely.

I wondered about the man's life. But I was too shy and busy chatting with my friends. Leaving the mountain, we went to a busiest and glittering Seoul and he headed to a dark, damp forest. His dim back is coming to mind. To be left is a very sad thing rather than to leave.

It is fortunate that the winter in which my friend 's moving season has shrunk has passed and it is a bright spring day. A new life has been revived where she left and a daffodil comes out and smiles affectionately. Branches gather the buds. Tulips such as an arrogant woman with a cape also raise their neck all over and welcome to spring. The cherry blossoms in the warm spring air are shy and twinkly. The world suddenly looks bright.

I walk with concentrate on the breath I feel in my nose. My body relaxes and my delusions disappear. The birds sound sweeter and clearer. It's fun to walk together, but isn't it good to walk alone?

Mother's Day present

My two sons came yesterday on Mother's Day. I slept well last night because I was so excited and tired of chatting with them.

"The kids want to meet us at the restaurant?" "I don't like eating outside on a special occasion day. We can't talk for a long time in a crowded place. Just ask them to come home."

"Mom, do you need anything?" "You didn't use the disposable mask pack you bought when you went to Korea earlier, did you? Bring it. I was just about to buy it."

For fear that my husband would snoop around the flower shop to buy flowers for Mother's Day, I cut a handful of scallions into a transparent vase and soaked the root part. The green part came up and already cut it off to cook. I prepared the steak and shrimp trimmed and my husband made a fuss about cleaning the house. The children stretched their noses by the oven and chatted, saying, "Nice, Smell Good."

To a younger son who doesn't care about his appearance, "Are you dating in this old, faded T-shirt? You need to get dressed properly. Girl won't like you." "Beautiful girls like me when I'm funny, even if I wear clothes like this. Mom, a woman should be pretty. As if I keep hugging the pretty puppy." I'm confused and suspicious about the standard of being his pretty, as who sleeps with a black French bulldog in his chest.

To elder son, who cares about his appearance, "Are you seeing anyone these days?" "I met a black girl online yesterday." "What about the Hong Kong girl?" "She is in Hong Kong now. I'll meet her when she come in June." “Meet evenly all races." "Black and Asians would be pretty if they had children." “Black women are nice." The husband interrupted and asked. "What happened to your daughter of a Korean tycoon?" "Chaebol are not for us. I'm tired." "The Harvard girl?" "I don't meet her because she doesn't look bright and happy because her parents interfere with her so much."

"Did you honestly posted fact on your online dating profile?” “Yes.” "Did the profile of the girls you're meeting not deceive you?" “No, It didn't happen." It's a convenient world. In the old days, there was a lot of fuss about arranged marriages. It's also a good thing to meet and break up easily with girl of all races online.

The younger son who resembled me and we lay on the bed and chatted. The elder son who resembles my husband and his dad were buzzing about watching basketball on TV. Even without Mother's Day gifts and flowers, it's just happy to see healthy, bright-looking children.

After lunch and dinner, the children got up. I said good-bye by beating their chest of elder son who liked basketball and a younger son who was excited about rock climbing. The sons patted my head, which was buried in their chest, and they said, "Mommy, isn't it getting smaller?"

Is the weeping willow still there?

"Do you have some old photos?" It's a call from a gallery that has been decorating exhibitions that reflect on the work activities in New York. I searched all over the studio and found a dusty album. In the early '60s, I noticed the first photo of my house built by a whole family on the outskirts of Seoul.

This is a photo of a front yard with luffa with my sister in midsummer. Back then, houseplants were rose moss, dark red cockscomb, autumn-flowering cosmos, crape myrtle, and marvel-of-Peru that formed black seeds.

There was no electricity in my house built outside Seoul's outskirts. It was his evening routine to polish the soot on the glass that was covered with lamp when my father came home. Even after many years, when I see incandescent lamps in which the filament lamps look transparent, the flashing a kerosene lamp is recalled.

My father was deeply attached to the small garden of his own home after war and evacuation. At that time, he obtained mint flowers and roses that were not easy to see on the outskirts of Seoul, brought them to planted them. Red roses, especially, used to be called red roses' houses by our neighbors as they were widely bred. Towards the end of the construction of the house, I planted branches of weeping willow that grow just by plugging into the ground in the spring. After a while, my family left for the U.S. after seeing a drooping figure that had grown big enough to cover one side of the house.

A few decades later, I asked my uncle, who helped build the house, about the old house. The neighborhood's turned into apartments, so it won't be easy to find it," he said, adding that he saw the willow tree remain beautiful until recently.

Our house was a small tile-roofed house next to the Yonhap filming station, where spectators flocked to the hills like clouds whenever there was an outdoor film shoot. I remember when the president of the film company took a movie shooting of 'Yi Soon Shin' starring Kim Jin-kyu, he came to my house where used to make North Korean-style food with sawdust, and took a sack of sawdust for a smoke screen that was needed to shoot a naval battle scene.

My husband, who has a lot of attachment to the garden like his father, walks in and out of Home Depot if he has to plant flowers when spring comes. This is the story of my husband's childhood home, which I have to listen to every year when spring comes. My husband, who grew up in the smell of dirt while eating yellow rice locusts in the fields in a noisy neighborhood with frog sounds, has a lot to talk about.

I have nothing to write these days because I grew up in concrete under excessive protection. I'm going to have to look back on my childhood memories like I pulled out of an old-fashioned projector that the sound of the film spinning.
