Cactus-like

In the city, smoke rises from buildings packed into every alley. The constant noise from cars rushing down the streets wears me out. At night, I’m often woken up by the sharp, screaming sound of an ambulance siren.

I remember one night when I was a child. In my sleep, I felt something—or someone—getting closer.
I opened my eyes and listened carefully. I quietly slipped out from under the covers, tiptoed, and approached the window. There was a small, thin man slowly and carefully walking toward our front door. Why was he sneaking up to our house in the middle of the night? Was he trying to steal something? I almost shouted, “Thief!” But then I looked closely. It was a man from our neighborhood—I recognized him. I suddenly wanted to scare him. I grabbed the pounding stick from beside me and hit the cabinet door as hard as I could. The loud, crashing noise shattered the silence. The man panicked and ran away as fast as he could. It might have been the biggest, scariest sound I’ve ever made in my life. After that, I saw him now and then during the day. Whenever we crossed paths, I quickly looked away and walked fast, sometimes hiding in an alley. He looked small and poor, always glancing around like he was searching for something to steal. Maybe that’s why... I never told anyone that he was a thief.

Since I was little, I’ve been a light sleeper. Not just that—my senses were always on high alert.
I reacted to everything. If it was a little cold, I said it was freezing. If it was warm, I said it was hot.
If someone looked at me, I got upset. If someone sat too close or even lay nearby, I didn’t like it. I made life hard for my mom, always finding something to complain about. She even thought about giving me herbal medicine to calm my nerves. Even now, I haven’t changed much. But things are different.

After my parents passed away, there was no one left to handle my sensitive ways. My husband? Hmm… not really. Maybe, over the years of a tough marriage, my senses became like old pickles—pressed down, wrinkled, and tired. My husband is like a heavy stone placed on top of a jar of pickles, pressing down on me all the time. Maybe that’s why I’m not as sharp or sensitive as I used to be.

Still, if I had to compare myself to something, I’d rather be a cactus than a pickle or wilted green onion.
A cactus, sitting quietly in the corner of a sunny window, covered in sharp spines, turning slowly toward the light—waiting for something.

That's bad timing

Things I do rarely work out at once. If I try to push and pull hard it three or four times, it will end up, but the process is difficult and tiring. I don’t necessarily have to fulfill what happened to me. So I do not respond and leave it alone.

Not long ago, the day I woke up around 4 am, my friend got up early too. She was tired of the early morning service at church near the University of Colombia at 5:30 am. I was very glad to hear that there were four people who came to the church the day my friend attended.

I have attended kindergarten and junior high school run by the Methodist foundation. When I was in college, I went to the Presbyterian Church in Jeong-dong, accompanied by a nice lady next door who had been evacuated from Hamgyeongdo. It was an excuse to go to Apple Salon across the street after church to meet my friends. I went to the Baptist Church in Pil-dong with older alumnus. Also I went to a church in Yeouid three or four times along with my friend who graduated from Yonsei Theology Department. Instead of going by faith, it was like going to Gangnam with friends.

After I came to the United States, I went to a church in Queens, where father handed it over to his son with the neighboring lady. I also attended a church with mostly believers Argentina, which was located in Flushing. I went to a church on the roadside of Whitestone Expressway. I almost took root because I liked the pastor. However, I stopped going to the church because the female believers keep contacting and asking me to come to the meeting.

I attended a church on the side of the railroad in Queens. I was hoping to pick me up when I didn’t have a car, but I gave up because the church van could not come to Brooklyn. Now it's turned into an expensive town where it's not easy to stick your feet, but at that time most Korean people knew Brooklyn as dangerous neighborhood. I go to a cathedral and bedsit temple to pray when I get a chance.

I do not like to go to crowded places. Especially, the believers I meet in the church will approach me to go to the district worship service, I would quietly disappear. Eventually I got used to sleeping on a leisurely Sunday. But the early morning worship my friend told me about seems to be my style for some reason. It is a good distance for a forth-block round trip walk from home. And it is morning that we should go quickly after worship and it is not gathering of many people.

Early dawn, what if the church door is closed? I approached. The red door is wide open. I like the red door. God seemed to welcome me as I wandered. However, the pastor was absent. I prayed for a long time. It was my first early morning worship ...

I walked quietly on the dawn road, seemed to be left alone in this city.

The dawn scene

As soon as I finish washing the dishes in the evening, I lie down and open a book. I fall asleep after dozing off at around 9:00 p.m. Sometimes I fall asleep at 8 p.m. I toss and turn with useless thoughts, and open my eyes at around 4:00 am.

I get up and look out the window. I count how many apartments are lit across the street and in the surrounding buildings. If people are visible on the roadside, I fix my gaze until they disappear. At that time, they are standing in the street with huge bags, as if they are waiting for a taxi to the airport.

If I see a white person standing around with suitcases, I think they are going home to Poland. This is because I often saw people going to the airport at dawn by dragging their big bags in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. A polish friend who lives next door takes a lot of stuff every time she visits her hometown. Once, she could not drag several luggage into a small bathroom at the airport and she was too nervous to leave them with someone else, so it was a big problem. It is a story of falling in love with American products just like us.

If a person who is a firm character and well sunburnt is waiting for a taxi with large bags, I think that it might be a person who goes to Central America. And it reminds me of a story I heard from someone.

'In the lush small village of Central America, there is a neighbor living together with dogs, pigs, chickens, geese and the whole family on a straw under a flat roof about the size of a one room. Wake up in the morning, animals, children go around looking for their own food, not for anyone to feed and care for. In the evening, they return to their home instinct and live peacefully in a small space without fighting loudly.’

'When a man who lives with her leaves, She doesn’t blame him, and a new man comes and lives with the children left behind because of the need of each other. One son was born in relationship with husband and the other son was born in relationship with older children, and refutes, 'How can a man do that?' There is a world that cannot be talked about by the human made discipline or the Confucian moral standards.

'People think of 50,000 things a day. However, only 10% of them are useful, and the rest are useless. "I walk around the window from dawn until the sunrise. How much wasted time do I spend?
